International Metrology Meetings 20.05.2023 – International exchange of experience and knowledge transfer are indispensable for the work of metrology and verification. Two important meetings took place in Vienna in 2023.
EURAMET TC-AUV Meeting
The annual EURAMET TC-AUV meeting took place in May 2023 at the BEV - Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying in Vienna. EURAMET is the organization for fundamental metrology in Europe. European and international cooperation and the participation in meetings of experts are the prerequisites for the recognition of measurement capabilities and competence at the BEV.
As part of the annual meetings, which are organized alternately by the participating countries, future developments in EURAMET as well as comparative measurements and joint research projects in the specialist areas are discussed and debated. A total of 34 people from 18 nations attended the plenary session and the subcommittee meetings in the areas of "Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics", "Acceleration and Vibration" and "Sound in Air". The expert meetings were held as a hybrid event due to demand from some participants.
Well-attended guided tours
The well-attended laboratory tours in the fields of acoustics, vibration, mass and weighing instruments, length measurement as well as time and frequency offered guests the opportunity to find out about BEV's expertise and measuring equipment. Chairman Enver SADIKOĞLU (TÜBİTAK UME, Turkey) thanked the BEV for the good organization and hospitality in Vienna.
Extended meeting of the CCM-WGG
At the same time, the extended meeting of the CCM-WGG was held at the BEV in the Arltgasse office building, which had last taken place virtually in 2021 and in 2019 in Paris (France) at the BIPM. CCM is the Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities at the BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures).
"WGG" stands for the Working Group on Gravimetry in this Committee. The BIPM is the organization for fundamental metrology worldwide.
Working Group for gravimetry
The meeting was extended by the participation of representatives from working groups of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG).
Discussions included the upcoming comparison measurement for absolute gravimeters in Colorado (USA) as well as developments and strategies in the field of gravimetry. In Austria, the BEV provides the national standard for gravity acceleration. This is validated and confirmed by regular international comparisons.
In the morning of the second day of the two-day meeting, invited IAG members also reported on the status of the International Terrestrial Gravity Reference System and Frame (ITGRS/ITGRF).
Visit to the Conrad Observatorium
In the afternoon, the Conrad Observatory was visited in cooperation with GeoSphere Austria at the end of the meeting. The Conrad Observatory is operated by GeoSphere Austria and is a geophysical research facility in the Gutenstein Alps. A total of 17 people from 13 nations attended the meeting. Chairman Shuqing WU (National Institute of Metrology, China) thanked the BEV for its efforts and perfect organization, which had made the success of the meeting possible.
BEV will remain an important international key player in the future
Thanks to these international meetings, the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying will continue to be a global key player in this field in the future and will continue to achieve international recognition for its work.
